THE RITE OF THE ACTIVE/ FLAMING DOOR - DRUID WISDOM

The Druids were in the habit of basing their religious practices and philosophies upon patterns easily observable in nature..... The Book of Pheryllt mentions The Order of spectrum colour, as being of great consequence to the Druids - as all natural patterns were seen as a direct reflection of "God's perfection made flesh". Through such patterns, (the Druids reasoned) man was privileged with a rare opportunity to "know something of God, who in himself is Unknowable"

The Pheryllt manuscript includes a ritual towards its very end, entitled Rite of the Flaming Door, which must surely be the same thing as the Active Door reference mentioned in the Celtic Mabinogion, also sometimes called Third Door or the Strong Door. By whichever name, The Door existed beyond the confines of our world of Abred, and to the Druids "Beyond the 7 coloured lights". This belief lies at the heart of the Rite outlined in the story, and which will be re-enscapulated here for easier use....If we were to extend the ancient metaphors surrounding The Celtic Door to the Beyond into today's lingo, it could certainly be called The Door "Somewhere over the Rainbow"

Before studying the rite it is suggested that The Rites of Assumption, where the concept of illumination is dealt with be read and understood. The key to the successful use of the rite will lie with the magician's ability to illuminate the given archetypal images into spiritual life.
The Master Chart of Elemental Symbolism found in Chapter III is of great help in studying the colour/elemental associations. A glass or crystal prism is useful to explore the visual/tactile energies of colour first-hand.

The book The 21 Lessons of Merlyn - A Study in Druid Magic and Lore - Douglas Monroe - is used and the above text is taken from the book.

A circle is cast outdoors - and a settling back within (meditational frame of mind) is found. Incense can be used. The Rite of the 3 Ways is used to prepare the circle. Close your eyes and count heartbeats until a suspension state settles in. Lastly illuminate the prose from rote...

Once your Otherworld Body stands before the Flaming Door, wait for it to open and then move through if desired - in the manner of a Gateway Rite. To return, exit back through the door and reverse the above verse - symbolism is used and is found in the above mentioned book.

In your clay body things are coming to expression and to light that were never known before, presences that never came to light or shape in any other individual.

To paraphrase Heidegger, man is a shepherd of being, we could say: man is a shepherd of clay. You represent an unknown world that begs you to bring it to voice.

Often the joy you feel does not belong to your individual biography but to the clay out of which you are formed. At other times, you will find sorrow moving through you, like a dark mist over a landscape. This sorrow is dark enough to paralyse you. It is a mistake to interfere with this movement of feeling.

It is more appropriate to recognize that this emotion belongs more to your clay than to your mind. It is wise to let this weather of feeling pass; it is on its way elsewhere.

We so easily forget that our clay has a memory which preceded our minds, a life of its own before it took our present form. Regardless of how modern we seem, we still remain ancient, sisters and brothers of the one clay.

In each of us a different part of the mystery becomes luminous. To truly be and become your self, you need the ancient radiance of others...
